A new face was welcomed to the team at Open Road West Norfolk in October — Mark Atkinson has been appointed lead tutor in construction.

Originally from Kent, since 1981 Mark has spent time living in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire before settling in nearby Downham Market where he still lives today.

When he left school in 1987 he began working in construction as a trainee draughtsman at a structural engineering practice in King’s Lynn.

From there he moved to an architectural practice where he gained a number of formal qualifications including BTEC and HNC Building Studies.

He explained: “These qualifications opened more opportunities for me. I joined a housing association based in Peterborough as a Technical Development Officer and I was later promoted to Senior Technical Officer/Clerk of Works.”

Outside of work he enjoys football, he is a lifelong Nottingham Forest fan, and he loves most sports but has a particular interest in motorsport.

He also likes to design and build “pretty much anything”, including scale models.

Despite the interest in miniatures Mark is thinking big and looking forward to helping youngsters work towards some of the qualifications he has attained so they can begin their careers in the construction industry.
